폼페이는 이번 여행 기간 중 가장 기대했던 곳 중 하나였다. 2천년 전, 갑자기 일어난 화산폭발로 삽시간에 전설이 되어버린 마을. 자연의 대재앙 앞에 고통스럽게 죽어가던 사람들이 어찌해 볼 틈도 없이 그대로 굳어져 유적이 되어버린 끔찍한 이야기. 그 덕에 세상에서 가장 유명한 화산이 되어버린 베수비오 화산. 비록 아름다운 이야기는 아니지만, 매우 흥미로운 이야기임에는 틀림없다. 때문에 오늘 하루 일정 전체를 폼페이를 위해 비워 두었다.
나폴리에서 폼페이까지는 교외 전철이 다니기 때문에 찾아가는 일은 어렵지 않다. 또, 많은 관광객이 폼페이 유적으로 가기 때문에 길을 잘 몰라도, 사람들이 영어를 잘 못해도 “폼페이 스카비” 역으로 가는 기차만 타면 어렵지 않다. 그 역은 오로지 폼페이 유적지를 위해서 만들어진 역인 듯, 내리면 바로 유적지 입구다.
2천년 전의 끔찍한 기억을 아는지 모르는지 길가의 개들은 팔자좋게 누워서 낮잠을 즐기고 있었고, 나를 포함한 많은 관광객들은 끔찍한 역사의 현장 앞에서 사진 찍기에 바빴다.
도시 전체가 뜨거운 용암 아래 묻혀 버렸다가 다시 발굴되었기 때문에 유적지의 규모는 어마어마하다. 쉽게 말해서 작은 도시 하나를 통째로 다 돌아 보아야 하는 것이 아닌가.
역사의 아픔을 딛고 자라난 숲 속에서 R이 말했다.
R : 여기 도토리도 있구나. 이거 주워가자.
나 : 아 귀찮게 왜.
R : 폼페이에 왔다는 기념품 하나 정도는 챙겨가야 할 것 아니냐. 잔 말 말고 주머니에 넣어.
나 : 아 또 왜 내 주머니야.
R : 무겁잖아.
그래, 무거운 것은 그렇다 치고 그 도토리가 파리의 제과점에서 말썽을 일으킬 줄은 꿈에도 몰랐다. 자세한 내용은 파리편에.
그러나 사실 하루종일 둘러보기에 폼페이는 너무 지루했다. 틀림없이 볼 만한 구경거리이기는 하지만, 비슷한 유적들이 계속 나타나자 슬슬 지겨워졌다. 게다가 울퉁불퉁한 도로 때문에 조금만 걸어도 쉬이 피곤해졌고, 겨울임에도 쨍쨍 내리쬐는 태양 때문에 금방 목이 말랐다. 여기서 하루종일 있겠다고 미리 호언장담 했건만, 도저히 지겨워서 안 되겠다.
나 : 안되겠다. 아말피 해안이나 가 보자.
R : 그건 또 어딘데?
나 : 여기 봐. 유럽에서 가장 가파른 해안 절벽이래. 보나마나 끝내줄 거야. 거기 가려면 우선 소렌토로 가야 되니까 우선 소렌토로 가자.
R : 소렌토? 거긴 볼 만해?
나 : 그럼! ‘돌아오라 소렌토로’라는 노래도 있잖아. 그러니까 돌아가자, 소렌토로.
그리고 우리는 폼페이의 노천 공연장 위에서 웬 아저씨가 부르는 우렁찬 노래 소리를 들을 수 있었다.

Pompei was one of the most expected sight-seeings in this travel. It became legend because of sudden volcanic activity at 2,000 years ago. The horrible story about people who had no choice but to be dead in front of huge disaster from the most famous volcano in the world. Though it is not a beautiful story, but very interesting. Because of it, I booked whole schedule of today for Pompei.
There is an electric railway from Napoli to Pompei, it is not difficult to go there. And because many tourists visit Pompei Scavi, even though you don’t know the map, though the people there cannot speak English well, if you can take the train to the ‘Pompei Scavi’ station, it doesn’t matter. That station seems to be built for Pompei Scavi only, the scavi is right in front of the station.
They don’t know the horrible memory from 2,000 years ago? The dogs are sleeping very well on the grassland and many tourists including us were busy at taking a picture in front of the horroble historical ruins.
Because the whole city was buried under the hot lava and discovered, the scale of the scavi is enormous. It means, we have to walk around the whole small city.
R said to me in the forest of sad history.
R : Oh, this is pretty seed. Let’s bring this.
I : Ah, it is so bothersome.
R : We have to take some souvenir. Put this in your pocket.
I : What? Why MY pocket?
R : Because it is so heavy.
OK, it’s OK. But I didn’t know then that the seed will make trouble in bakery in Paris. The detailed story is in volume Paris.
But in fact, Pompei was so boring to travel for whole day. Surely it is interesting place but so many similar buildings made me exhausted. And uncomfortable roads there made me tired, terrible shining sun in winter made me thirsty. I assured to stay there for whole day, but I cannot stand them.
I : Oh, I cannot stand. Let’s get to the Amalfi Coast.
R : Where is it?
I : See, the guide book says it is the steepest cliff in Europe. It should be wonderful. So we have to go to Sorrento first.
R : Sorrento? Is it worth visiting?
I : Sure, there is a song “Come back to Sorrento(Torna a Surriento)”. So let’s come back, to Sorrento.
And we could hear some man singing a song on the concert hall in Pompei Scavi.
