카타콤베는 기독교 신자들이 로마 제국의 박해를 피해 몰래 만든 지하 무덤이다. 그 규모가 어마어마하다 하고 또 날라리 신자도 신자라고 천주교 신자로서 왠지 한 번 순례를 해야만 할 것 같았다.
그렇게 마음 먹은 때가 이미 오후 세 시. 다섯 시면 문을 닫는다고 하는데 사실 굉장히 아슬아슬했다. 시내에서 조금 떨어진 곳에 있어서 가이드 북에는 지도도 없고, 몇 번 버스를 타고 가라는 말만 있어서 타고 끝까지 가서 내렸는데,
R : 어라? 왜 아무 것도 없어?
나 : 글쎄…… 앗! 저기 표지판이!!
R : 버스 왔던 길로 되돌아가라는데?
그래서 한참 버스를 달려 오던 길을 되돌아 갔다. 정말 ‘한참’ 걸었다. 해는 뉘엿뉘엿 서산 너머로 넘어가고 있었고, 담장 너머로 보이는 이국적인 나무들은 우리로 하여금 세상의 끝에 온 것 같은 기분을 들게 하였다.
R : 게다가 왜 사람이 하나도 없지? 근데 무덤에는 왜 가? 정말 볼 만하긴 한 거야?
나 : 당연하지! 나만 믿어!!
사실 내가 박박 우겨서 온 것이긴 한데, 별로 자신은 없었다. 볼 만 한지 아닌지는 보고 나서 생각하고, 일단 내가 오고 싶었던 곳에 왔다는 게 중요한 거지. 히히.
세상의 끝에 다다를 만큼 걸었을 때 쯤, 드디어 카타콤베 하나를 찾았다. 허름한 성당 옆에 있는 입구에서 다행히 4시 40분에 하는 마지막 영어 가이드를 잡았다. 이 곳이 신성한 장소인 탓도 있지만 카타콤베 내부가 엄청나게 복잡하고 긴 미로로 이루어진 탓에 가이드 없이는 들어가 볼 수 없게 되어 있다.
R : 이거 가이드 없이 몰래 들어가서 탐험해 보면 재미있지 않을까?
지하 무덤에 영원히 묻힐 소리 하고 있네. 카타콤베는 정말 상상 이상으로 복잡하고 거대했다. 가이드를 따라 다니며 가지 않은 길을 힐끗 힐끗 봤는데, 야…. 이건 정말 놀랍다. 정말 신앙의 힘이란 놀랍다고 밖에 말 할 수가 없다.
우리 가이드는 신앙심으로 똘똘 뭉친 정열적인 할아버지였다. 탐험하는 내내 “예수 그리스도, 우리의 구원자시여!”를 외치며 정말 열성적으로 내부를 설명하시던 그 할아버지는 결국 답답함을 견디지 못하셨는지 우리에게 물었다.
가이드 : 근데 당신들, 알아듣고 있긴 한 겁니까?

Catacombe is an underground graveyard made secretly by christians in Roman empire. They say it is really enormous and I’m a christian though really naive anyway. So I felt that I had to visit there.
It was 3 PM. It will be closed at 5 so we had not so much time. And it is a little far from the city, so there is no map on guide book, there is just which bus we should take. So we took that bus and took off at the final stop. BUT,
R : Ah? Why there is nothing here?
I : Well….. Oh! there is a direction on the sign board!!
R : It says that we should return the way the bus came?
So we walked back the way the bus came. We walked really ‘MUCH’. The sun set to the mountain on the west, and the exotic trees showed over the wall made us feel that we were at the end of the world.
R : Moreover, why there is nobody here? By the way, why are we going to the graveyard? Is it really worth visiting?
I : Of course!! Just trust me!!
In fact, I insisted to come here, but I was not so confident. Judging if it is worth visiting or not is after visiting there, anyway the important thing is that we are going to the place where I really wanted to go.
After we walked as to walk to the end of the world, we found one catacombe. Fortunately, at the enterance beside a humble church, we met the last English guide at 4:40. Not only it is a holy place, but also it is really complicated and long maze, we are not allowed to go in without guide.
R : Don’t you think that it is interesting to descover this without guide?
It would probably make you burried here. Catacombe was much complecated than I expected. I glanced the not-taken ways during follwing the guide, oh, Jesus!!! This is really amazing. The power of piety is really amazing.
My guide was an energetic old man who was really God-oriented. During the whole decovery he shouted “Jesus Christ! Our savior!!” and explained hard about catacombe. Finally he might not be able to stand feeling anxious, he asked us.
Guide : By the way, do you understand my explaination really?
