Using both father and mother’s family names

While doing homework at school with Rodrigo, we happened to talk about “name”.

“Hey, Rodrigo, is ‘Miguel’ popular name in Spain?”
“No, not so popular.”
“How about ‘Rodrigo’?”
“Less popular then Miguel.”
“How about ‘Garcia’?”
“I was used as name before, but we use it as family name only nowadays.”

So….. out talking was continued.

“Anyway, there are some ‘Rodrigo’s, but my family name is less popular. Especially second family name.”
“What? Second family name?”

I heard the Europeans sometimes have 2~3 given names. It was interesting enough, but now there is a guy who has two family names!! WOW.

He said that first family name is from his father and second family name is from his mother.

“Then, how about your child? He can’t have 4 family names…… Father’s father’s and mother’s mother’s?”
“No, father’s father’s, mother’s father’s.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”

So, baby gets his grandfather’s family name and his mother’s father’s family name as his family name. And one more news.

“But Portugees use it differently. Mother’s family name comes first and father’s family name comes later. And child follows mother’s mother’s and father’s mother’s.”
“What? Why?”
“Well, I don’t know. Do you know?”
“……”

Well, relationship between Spain and Portugal is worth reserching.

In spain, there is no rule that wife follows husband’s family name, which is very common in other Europe countries. On the other hands, there is a custom that wife follows her husband’s in Japan which is located in Asia. How various!!

It reminded me of a new movement to use both father’s and mother’s family name in Korea. I don’t think neither it’s natural nor sucks. But at least, some silly insist like “Then in the future, somebody’s family name will be more than 1,000 characters!! It’s impossible!!” lost it’s confidence.
