저녁 9시가 조금 넘었을 때 쯤, 크리스마스 미사를 드리기 위해 집을 나섰다.
나 : 아무래도 크리스마스라 사람이 굉장히 많을 거야. 일찍 가서 자리 잡지 않으면 자리가 없을걸?
R : 그런데 말이지, 돌아올 때 차가 있을까?
나 : 당연하지. 크리스마스에는 로마 시민들 전부 다 거기 가 있을텐데 설마 버스가 안 다니겠어? 당연히 연장 운행 하겠지.
R : 혹시 안 다니면?
나 : 아 아 걱정마. 다녀. 다녀. 잔말 말고 얼른 지하철이나 타러 가자.
그러나 지하철 역 입구는 굳게 닫혀 있었다.
나 : 뭐야 이거. 크리스마스라 지하철 쉬나 본데? 에이, 버스 타자 버스.
R : 이봐. 버스도 없는 것 같은데?
2006년 크리스마스 이브 저녁, 로마. 길거리에는 달구지 하나 보이지 않았다.
나 : …… 걸어 가야겠네.
R : 이런 쉬팅.
해가 저문 밤길을 사박사박 걷다 보니 낮에는 보지 못했던 새로운 로마의 모습이 조금씩 보이기 시작했다.
R : 와! 저기 다리 위의 천사들 좀 봐!
나 : 뭐? 저게 천사들이었어?
정말 몰랐다. 다리 위에 천사들이 있었는 줄.
예상대로 바티칸 안은 크리스마스 미사를 드리러 온 신도들로 발 디딜 틈 없이 붐볐다. 표를 구할 수 있었던 운 좋은 사람들은 성 베드로 성당으로, 우리같이 표가 없는 사람들은 성 베드로 광장으로 모였다. 성당에서 울려퍼지는 경건한 종소리를 듣고 있노라니 나도 모르게 마음이 숙연해진다. 이윽고 열 두시가 되어 성가가 울려퍼지며 스크린에 베네딕도 16세 교황님께서 걸어가시는 모습이 비추어졌다. 엄청나게 많은 사람이 모인 성 베드로 광장은 놀랍게도 쥐 죽은 듯 고요했으며 내가 여지껏 본 것 중 가장 성대하고 환상적인 미사가 거행되었다.
두 시간이 조금 넘게 진행된 바티칸의 크리스마스 미사. 그리고 그 곳, 성 베드로 광장에 내가 서 있었다. 정말 평생 잊지 못할 크리스마스였다.
R : 젠장. 근데, 숙소까지 또 걸어가야 돼?
나 : 정말 잊지 못할 크리스마스지?

Around 9 PM, we left hotel to go to Vatican to worship Christmas mass.
I : There should be really many people there. If we go there late then there might not be any place.
R : By the way, will be there any bus after the mass?
I : Of course. Today is Christmas and every Roman citizens might be in Vatican. So surely there will be more buses than ordinary day.
R : But what if…….
I : Ah, don’t worry. There should be. Let’s get to take a subway now.
But, the enterance to the subway station was closed.
I : Oh? Maybe subway is over because today is Christmas. Hmm.. Let’s take bus instead.
R : Hey, it seems that there is no bus either?
Christmas Eve evening, 2006. There was nothing on the road even a horse coach.
I : …… Oh, we have to walk then.
R : Shit.
Walking in the dark night, we could see something new which we could not see under the day light.
R : Wow! See the angels on the bridge!!
I : What? It was the angels?
I really didn’t know that there were angels on the bridge.
As I expected, inside the Vatican was really crowded full of prayers. The lucky people who could get the ticket gathered in the church, the poor people like me gathered in the square. Hearing the bell from the cathedral, my heart became full of holy mind. Meanwhile, it comes 12, with holy songs the pope Benedicto the 16th came up on the screen. Surprisingly, the square full of people was really quiet and the most fantastic mass I have ever seen before was begun.
The Christmas mass in Vatican for about 2 hours. And I was there, Piazza di San Pietro. It was really unforgettable Christmas.
R : By the way, should we walk to the hotel again?
I : Isn’t it really unforgettable Christmas?
